Ribeira Sacra

Welcome to the Ribeira Sacra, a place where time seems to stand still. This region holds the largest concentration of Romanesque architecture in rural Europe, with landscapes that inspire peace and tranquillity. It was these very qualities that attracted monastic communities in the 4th century, laying the groundwork for the unique landscape you see today.

They transformed the steep hillsides, building the terraced vineyards that are now the area's signature feature. This demanding work, often called "heroic viticulture," allowed them to cultivate grapes in what were once considered inhospitable lands, giving rise to exceptional wines and a rich cultural heritage.

ITINERARY

  • We'll pick you up from either Vigo, Orense or Porto and whisk you away for your first taste of Galicia, whether that's lunch or dinner. The rest of the day is yours to settle into your high-end hotel in Monforte de Lemos, a city celebrated for its medieval and modern history. We'll end the evening with a delightful guide walk through the historic quarter, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, complete with tapas and wine.

If you need assistance with your flight tickets, please let us know as soon as possible.

  • Our adventure begins with a visit to Primitivo Lareu, a local winemaker and sculptor passionate about preserving traditional methods. He'll welcome us to his vineyard on the banks of the Miño River, where you'll be surrounded by breathtaking scenery. We'll taste his unique wines, made from native grape varieties, and enjoy a delicious lunch at his winery.

The afternoon/eve will be dedicated to exploring more of Monforte de Lemos and its impressive Romanesque heritage, where we will enjoy some tapas and wine.

  • Today, we dive into the legendary Cañones do Sil. Here, you'll witness heroic viticulture firsthand—an admirable and demanding craft where human effort merges with wild nature to create extraordinary wines. We'll meet Ana and Javier from Atrium Vitis, a family project with twelve small plots of land in the UNESCO Global Geopark "Montañas do Caurel." Their dedication to manual labour and the unique soil gives their wines distinct personalities. After a wine tasting and lunch at the winery, we'll explore the ancient landscape, walking among centuries-old chestnut trees, imposing oaks, and cork trees.

  • No trip to the Ribeira Sacra is complete without a catamaran cruise along the Miño River. For two hours, we'll glide past vine-covered slopes, ancient forests, and submerged islands. Along the way, we'll discover the traditional architecture of riverside villages and hear some of the many legends that make these lands so magical. We'll conclude our journey with a relaxing lunch, allowing us to savor the memories of our time together.

For those not staying for the final night, we can drop you off in either Vigo, Orense or Porto. Please let us know your preferred drop-off location in advance so we can finalize arrangements.

For those of you continuing with the tour, our last night will be spent in the charming city of Vigo. We will check into our hotel, and a local guide will then lead us on a one-hour walk through the historic centre. Following the walk, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the region's exceptional food and wine with Ana.

  • After our final breakfast together, we’ll say our goodbyes.

While you are responsible for arranging your own transportation to the airport, we would be happy to coordinate a transfer for you upon request.
